Every year, medical schemes suffer huge financial losses through fraud, as it is estimated that 10% to 15% of all claims are fraudulent.
Bring those statistics to bear on the Benefit Society, where total benefits paid for 2004 was R178 million, and you are looking at between R17,8 million and R26,7 million of your contributions that have been wasted due to fraud last year alone!
Although there are certain measures in place to identify suspect claims, it is very difficult for the Society to pick up a fraudulent claim where a service provider (alone or with the knowledge and co-operation of the member) wilfully sets out to defraud the Society.
